Union Cabinet approves Lines 4 and 4A, adding 28 stations across greater Pune.
Enquire NowPune's public transport map just got a major redraw. The Central government has approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, giving the go-ahead to Line 4 (Kharadi–Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug). The decision came from the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in late November 2025, marking the second major approval under Phase-2 after Lines 2A and 2B earlier in the year.
The scale of the expansion is significant. Line 4 will run from Kharadi to Khadakwasla via Hadapsar and Swargate, extending 25.52 kilometres with 22 elevated stations. Spur Line 4A, covering Nal Stop to Warje and Manik Baug, will add a further 6.12 kilometres with six elevated stations. Together, both corridors cover 31.64 km with a total of 28 stations. The project has been estimated at ₹9,857.85 crore, with a target to complete construction within five years.
What makes this corridor particularly important is how it stitches together Pune's key work and residential zones. The corridors will link major commercial hubs, IT parks, educational institutions, industrial zones, and thick residential clusters across East, South, and West Pune. Traversing Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway, the project will ease congestion on Pune's busiest routes while improving safety and promoting green, sustainable mobility.
Connectivity doesn't stop at the two new lines. These lines will seamlessly integrate with operational and sanctioned corridors at Kharadi Bypass and Nal Stop (Line 2) and Swargate (Line 1), while also providing an interchange at Hadapsar Railway Station and connecting with future corridors towards Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road. This kind of multimodal interchange network is exactly what urban planners point to when explaining why metro-adjacent real estate tends to outperform over a 5-10 year horizon — commute time drops, and that translates directly into rental and resale demand.
Ridership projections underline the long-term intent behind the investment. Daily ridership on Line 4 and 4A combined is expected to be 4.09 lakh in 2028, rising to nearly 7 lakh in 2038, 9.63 lakh in 2048, and beyond, with the Kharadi–Khadakwasla corridor alone growing from 3.23 lakh passengers in 2028 to 9.33 lakh by 2058. Execution has been handed to a familiar operator: construction will be executed by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) and is expected to be completed within five years. Pre-construction activities such as topographical surveys and detailed design consultancy are already underway.
This approval also pushes Pune past a symbolic threshold. With this latest approval, Pune Metro's network will expand beyond the 100 km milestone, a significant step in the city's journey towards a modern, integrated, and sustainable urban transit system. Officials have framed it in equally ambitious terms for the years ahead: with Line 4 and 4A, Pune will not just get more metro tracks, it will gain a faster, greener, and more connected future, with corridors designed to save commuters hours of commuting time, reduce traffic congestion, and provide a safe, reliable, and affordable alternative.
For homebuyers, the practical takeaway is about timing and micro-market selection. Areas along the Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla belt and the Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug spur are likely to see gradual re-rating as construction milestones are hit over the next five years — historically, Pune's Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor saw similar appreciation patterns once construction visibly progressed. Buyers evaluating projects in these micro-markets, including established developer townships and upcoming launches, should factor in both the immediate connectivity gains and the longer runway to 2031 completion when comparing entry prices today versus post-metro values.
Separately, the state government has signalled that this is not the final word on Pune's metro ambitions. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that a 200-kilometre metro network will be developed in Pune in the coming years, with instructions given to Maha Metro to prepare a comprehensive project plan for the expansion. That points to further corridor announcements ahead, reinforcing Pune's position as one of India's fastest-expanding metro cities and a market where infrastructure-led real estate growth is likely to continue well into the next decade.
