Ahmedabad-Rajkot Semi-High Speed Rail: What It Means for Limbdi's Industrial Corridor
Gujarat's push for faster inter-city rail connectivity has reached a key milestone for the Ahmedabad-Rajkot stretch. In November 2019, the Gujarat Government gave in-principal approval to the Ahmedabad-Rajkot Semi High-Speed Rail Corridor. The project is being executed through a dedicated agency, and it will be executed by the Gujarat Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (G-RIDE), a joint venture of the Ministry of Railways and Govt. of Gujarat incorporated on January 6, 2017.
The alignment runs largely parallel to the busy NH-47 highway, passing through some of Gujarat's fastest-growing industrial belts. The stations planned are Sabarmati, Sanand, Bawla, Limbdi, Chotila and Rajkot. On speed and travel time, trains on the line will operate with a top speed of 160 kmph and cover the distance between Ahmedabad and Rajkot in two hours, reducing travel times from the 4.5 hours it takes via National Highway NH-47.
One of the biggest draws of this corridor is its integration with India's flagship bullet train project. The line will connect to the 508 km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Line at Sabarmati and act as a feeder, effectively reducing the travel time between Rajkot and Mumbai from 12 hours to less than 5 hours. Cost estimates have evolved since the initial approval. The Ahmedabad-Rajkot Semi High-Speed Rail Project is a 227.60 km proposed line connecting Ahmedabad and Rajkot through 6 stations with an estimated cost of Rs. 28,291.44 crore. More recent reporting pegs the number higher, noting the project, estimated to cost Rs 38 thousand crores, showcases the state's commitment to improving rail infrastructure.
On the ground, planning work is progressing in phases. G-RIDE has already floated design consultancy tenders covering the Sabarmati-Bavla stretch, and the Gujarat Rail Infrastructure Company has already submitted a detailed project report to the Railway Board for approval. Officials have also indicated an ambitious operating plan once the line goes live, with the train departing from the Sabarmati Multi-Modal Hub, offering a modern and efficient travel experience at speeds of up to 200 kmph in later phases.
For Limbdi and the surrounding NH-47 belt, the corridor is more than a transit upgrade — it's an economic catalyst. The town sits directly on the proposed elevated alignment, and the route will feature an elevated corridor along the Ahmedabad-Rajkot highway, with strategically placed stations at Bavla-Bagodara and Limbdi to serve passengers along the way. This is the same NH-47 stretch where Mahindra has already staked ground with its industrial park. Origins by Mahindra, Ahmedabad is located on National Highway–47 (Ahmedabad–Rajkot) and within the DMIC Influence Zone at the epicentre of the thriving Industrial Region of Gujarat State. Spanning a large footprint near Sanand, the park is developed in strategic partnership with International Finance Corporation and offers a dependable platform for long term growth in western India. Improved rail access along this same corridor only strengthens the investment case for manufacturing, warehousing and allied real estate near these industrial nodes.
The ambitions for this corridor don't stop at Rajkot. Planners are eyeing a further extension toward Gujarat's upcoming smart city. Plans are underway to extend the train service to Dholera, a fast-developing hub for national and international companies, with a detailed project report for the Bagodara-Dholera route soon to be submitted to the Railway Board. If cleared, the extension will allow people to travel from Dholera to Ahmedabad in just 40 to 50 minutes, boosting connectivity and economic growth.
This push fits into a larger state-wide momentum on semi-high speed rail. In a related development, the Centre approved a separate line in this category — the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a Rs.20,667 crore Ahmedabad (Sarkhej)–Dholera Semi High Speed rail project — and officials describe it as India's first semi high-speed rail project, serving as a pioneer project acting as a reference model for the phased expansion of semi high-speed rail across the country. Together, these projects signal that Gujarat's NH-47 industrial corridor, running through Sanand, Bawla, Limbdi and Chotila, is set to become one of the most rail-connected industrial stretches in western India.
For homebuyers and investors watching this corridor, the takeaway is straightforward: faster, more reliable connectivity between Ahmedabad and Rajkot typically translates into rising land values, new industrial investment and better job access along the route. Areas near planned stations — particularly Sanand and Limbdi — are worth tracking closely as land acquisition and construction milestones are announced over the coming years.
