Centre Approves Ahmedabad (Sarkhej)-Dholera Semi-High Speed Rail Project

India's railway map just got a landmark addition. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Ahmedabad (Sarkhej)–Dholera Semi High-Speed Double Line project at an estimated cost of approximately Rs 20,667 crore. The clearance, granted on May 13, 2026, marks Indian Railways' first-ever semi high-speed corridor built on indigenously developed technology.

The project involves a 134 km double-line broad-gauge corridor connecting Sarkhej in Ahmedabad to Dholera. Trains on this stretch will run at an operational speed of 200 kmph, with a design speed of 220 kmph, putting it in the same performance bracket as the Vande Bharat Express. Notably, the corridor's cost works out to roughly Rs 154.2 crore per km, which is less than half the per-km cost of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS, largely due to tunnel-free construction, lower land acquisition costs, broad-gauge compatibility, and use of India's indigenous Kavach train protection system.

Connectivity is the biggest draw of this corridor. It will directly link Ahmedabad with the fast-developing Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), the under-construction Dholera International Airport, and the Lothal National Maritime Heritage Complex. Officials note that the corridor will benefit close to 284 villages with a combined population of nearly five lakh people, effectively bringing daily commuting and same-day return travel within reach for residents and businesses across this belt.

The project falls under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, India's integrated multi-modal infrastructure programme aimed at coordinating railways, roads, airports and logistics. Railway officials have described the corridor as a pioneer project and a reference model for the phased expansion of semi high-speed rail across the rest of the country. Beyond passenger convenience, the line is expected to cut oil imports by an estimated 0.48 crore litres and lower CO2 emissions by around 2 crore kg annually, comparable to the environmental impact of planting ten lakh trees.

Construction is targeted for completion by 2030-31. For a region already witnessing an infrastructure push, this rail line adds a critical layer to what is fast becoming a multi-modal transport ecosystem, sitting alongside the six-lane Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway, the upcoming international airport, and Dholera's planned internal monorail network.

The timing matters for anyone tracking Dholera's real estate trajectory. Investors who entered Dholera before the Expressway's inauguration have already seen strong appreciation, and the rail approval opens a fresh early-entry window before the broader market fully reacts. With the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway already operational and cutting commute time to around 45 minutes, the rail corridor is set to further merge the two markets, pushing residential and industrial demand outward from a saturating Ahmedabad into Dholera SIR.

Gujarat's Chief Minister has called the approval a matter of pride for the state, noting that this ambitious project will prove to be a historic milestone in the development of modern infrastructure in Gujarat. For homebuyers and investors evaluating western Gujarat, this rail corridor is a strong signal that Dholera's transformation from a planned smart city on paper to a functioning industrial and residential hub is gathering real momentum.
