Tata Semiconductor Dholera Reaches 50% Completion: Trial Production by Late 2026

Construction work at the Tata Semiconductor Dholera plant is 50% completed, with trial runs expected to begin by late 2026. The ₹910 billion project is a collaboration between Tata Electronics and Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC).

Foundation work is finished, and the facility is now transitioning into its most technically demanding phases—cleanroom installation, equipment integration, and process calibration. Tata Electronics and ASML signed a Memorandum of Understanding on May 16, 2026, to support the upcoming 300 mm fabrication facility in Dholera. This partnership strengthens the technical foundation required for world-class chip manufacturing.

The fab will use advanced AI systems and automation to manufacture microchips for automotive, AI, and wireless communications. It will focus on nodes ranging from 110nm to 28nm and manufacture chips for power management, display drivers, microcontrollers, and high-performance computing logic. The facility is expected to produce 50,000 wafers monthly upon completion.

The SEZ is spread over 66.166 hectares of land and is positioned to provide employment to 21,000 persons. The initiative is anticipated to create more than 20,000 skilled jobs, driving economic growth in the region. The facility is expected to catalyze a significant supply chain ecosystem, with around 800 vendor companies and OEM suppliers projected to operate in and around the plant upon full operationalization.

The region is being developed with strong infrastructure and multiple connectivity options, including road, Ahmedabad-Dholera expressway, upcoming Dholera airport, proposed rail, Dholera seaport and freight corridor support. On May 13, 2026, the Union Cabinet approved a ₹20,667 crore, 134-km rail line connecting Ahmedabad (Sarkhej), Dholera SIR, Dholera Airport, and Lothal. Once built, it should cut the Ahmedabad-to-Dholera trip to under 50 minutes.

Tata Electronics, in partnership with Taiwan's Powerchip, is targeting first silicon from its 300-mm wafer fabrication plant at Dholera by the end of this year—the first time chips will be fabricated at commercial scale on Indian soil. Industry experts view this milestone as transformative for India's semiconductor independence and position in global supply chains.
