Pink Line construction accelerates, bringing faster east-west Mumbai connectivity to Vikhroli by late 2026.
Enquire NowMumbai's eastern suburbs are about to get a major connectivity boost. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is set to open the Metro Line 6, from Swami Samarth Nagar in Andheri (W) to Vikhroli, in the second half of 2026 without the controversial metro car depot at Kanjurmarg, working instead on a unique plan with an elevated eight-lane corridor with pit lines. This engineering workaround means the line no longer has to wait for the long-delayed Kanjurmarg depot land clearance to become operational.
The Pink Line itself is a fully elevated stretch that has been years in the making. The 15.31 km line will connect Swami Samarth Nagar in Andheri (West) with Vikhroli, offering a crucial east–west link across the city. Along the way, the corridor encompasses 13 stations: Swami Samarth Nagar, Adarsh Nagar, Jogeshwari (West), JVLR Junction, Shyam Nagar, Mahakali Caves, SEEPZ Village, Saki Vihar Road, Rambaug (Powai), Powai Lake, IIT Powai, Kanjurmarg (West), and Vikhroli (EEH).
On the maintenance workaround itself, an MMRDA official explained the rationale directly. "We have planned this unique maintenance yard for the rakes," said an MMRDA official to Hindustan Times. "Eight elevated pit lines will be built that will allow our staff to do regular maintenance and checks of the rakes." For scheduled overhauls beyond routine checks, trains will be transported to the Mandale depot, allowing the line to launch without further delay.
On the ground, construction has been progressing steadily through 2025. As of late 2024, the project was approximately 66% complete, with 71% of the viaduct and 52% of station work finished, and station structures were anticipated to reach 75% completion by June 2025, with civil work expected to conclude by mid-2025. Reports through early 2026 indicate over 70% of civil construction work is complete, with trial runs expected in early 2026.
Once live, the Pink Line promises real time savings for daily commuters. The Pink Line is designed to reduce travel times along the JVLR route by 30 to 45 minutes, and it will also plug into the wider metro network — providing interchanges with Yellow Line 2 at Adarsh Nagar, Aqua Line 3 at SEEPZ, Green Line 4 at Kanjur Marg West, and Red Line 7 at the Jogeshwari–Vikhroli Link Road.
This is exactly the kind of infrastructure shift that has drawn Mahindra Lifespaces deeper into Mumbai's central suburbs. The developer has launched Mahindra Rainforest on LBS Marg, Kanjur, a project that sits directly along this corridor. Commenting on the launch, the company's leadership underlined the strategic timing: "Mumbai continues to be a strategic focus market for Mahindra Lifespaces, and the central suburbs are an important residential corridor driven by strong connectivity and established social infrastructure. With Mahindra Rainforest, we are bringing our philosophy of 'Homes of Positive Energy' to life through a landmark mixed-use development." The project itself is designed with the metro in mind — offering strong connectivity to the Eastern Express Highway and the Jogeshwari–Vikhroli Link Road, while forthcoming infrastructure such as the Goregaon–Mulund Link Road and an east–west flyover in Bhandup are expected to enhance access.
For homebuyers evaluating the eastern suburbs, the Pink Line's H2 2026 target date is a signal worth tracking. Projects sitting within walking distance of upcoming stations — like Mahindra's developments near the Kanjurmarg and Vikhroli stretch — stand to benefit first from reduced commute times and the resulting uptick in rental and resale demand that typically follows a metro launch in Mumbai.
