Shivajinagar-Hinjewadi Pink Line nears launch, transforming West Pune's commute and real estate.
Enquire NowAfter years of construction and multiple delayed deadlines, the Shivajinagar-Hinjewadi Pink Line corridor is finally on the verge of going live for commuters. The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has cleared the first 12-station stretch between Maan and Balewadi for passenger operations, and officials are now working out the final details of a formal launch. This is one of the most closely watched infrastructure milestones for Pune's western suburbs, and it carries direct implications for anyone tracking property values around Hinjewadi, Wakad, Baner, and Balewadi.
According to recent reports, the initial section, which lies between Maan-Balewadi and is 12 stations long, was approved by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) for passenger services on July 23. With statutory clearances in place, the state government is now finalising the ceremonial launch. The state government is currently preparing the schedule for the inauguration, and according to the present plan the Prime Minister might inaugurate the section online during the first two weeks of September, with PMRDA expecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate it virtually. Officials have confirmed that the exact date of the inauguration has still not been finalized.
The rollout isn't stopping at 12 stations. Metro officials are pushing to extend passenger services even before the full corridor is complete. The PMRDA has requested a CMRS inspection at five more stations, and if the safety regulator gives the go-ahead, metro services could be extended to a route comprising 17 stations. This staggered approach reflects a broader pattern seen across the project: engineers and safety regulators are clearing sections as they become fully ready rather than waiting for the entire 23-station line.
The remaining stretch toward the city centre will take a bit longer. The section leading towards Shivajinagar will open only after the officials have carried out the necessary safety inspections and obtained the required clearances, on the 23.3 km line running from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has given a broader timeline for the full corridor, stating in March 2026 that the 11-kilometre stretch of the Shivajinagar-Hinjewadi metro corridor will be inaugurated in May this year, while the remaining 12 kilometres are expected to be completed by July. While actual timelines have shifted since, the direction is clear: Pune's third metro line is moving from testing to real, ticketed service.
Once fully operational, the impact on daily commuting will be significant. The corridor is expected to ease traffic congestion in Hinjawadi, a major IT hub that experiences heavy daily traffic, and once operational, the metro will provide faster, safer, and more convenient travel for thousands of IT professionals and regular commuters. This is particularly relevant for the thousands of employees working across Rajiv Gandhi InfoTech Park, one of India's largest IT clusters, who currently rely almost entirely on road transport along the congested Mumbai-Pune Highway and Hinjewadi Phase 1-3 stretch.
For homebuyers, the metro's progress is already being read as a signal of long-term value in West Pune. Real estate advisors tracking the corridor note that the Pink Line is set to be a major catalyst for real estate transformation, particularly along the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar corridor, addressing the long-standing last-mile connectivity issue that has historically bottlenecked growth in these areas. Micro-markets like Baner, Balewadi, Wakad, Mahalunge, and Hinjewadi are increasingly being evaluated not just for their proximity to office campuses but for direct metro access as well.
The broader Pune Metro network is also expanding in parallel. The Union Cabinet has already given the green light to further growth: the Union Cabinet has approved the Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2, covering Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi, spanning 12.75 km and 13 stations connecting fast-developing suburbs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. Additionally, these new corridors will link up with the Pink Line itself, since the new corridors will also integrate at the District Court Interchange Station with Line-1 and Line-3, enabling seamless multimodal urban travel.
For buyers evaluating homes in West Pune right now, the takeaway is straightforward: the Pink Line is no longer a distant promise on a planning map. With CMRS clearance secured for the Maan-Balewadi stretch and a formal launch expected imminently, the corridor is entering its final approach to commercial operations. Developers active in Hinjewadi, Mahalunge, and neighboring micro-markets are positioning new residential launches around this improved connectivity, making it a factor worth weighing seriously in any purchase decision in this belt over the coming months.
