Pune Metro Phase 2: Tenders Floated for Ramwadi-Wagholi Line

Eastern Pune's long wait for metro relief has taken a concrete step forward. Tenders have been invited for the first phase of the proposed Ramwadi-Wagholi metro line project of the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation, covering a 4.8-kilometre elevated stretch. This first package specifically covers the Ramwadi to Tuljabhavani Nagar section, and construction will be carried out in phases, with the first phase covering a 4.8-km stretch from Ramwadi to Tuljabhavani Nagar, with tenders for this phase, which includes four stations and access ramps, already floated.

The full corridor is far more ambitious. The project will be implemented in coordination with MSIDC, which will construct a six-lane elevated road, while MahaMetro will build the Metro viaduct above it along the same alignment, with the corridor featuring 11 elevated stations including Viman Nagar, Somnath Nagar, Kharadi Bypass, Tuljabhavani Nagar, Ubalenagar, Upper Kharadi Road, Wagheshwar Temple, Wagholi, Siddharth Nagar, Bakori Phata and Vitthalwadi. This double-decker design mirrors an approach already used elsewhere in the city, as the Ramwadi-Wagholi-Vitthalwadi section will also have a double-decker flyover, similar to the integrated flyover on Karve Road, which is part of the Pune-Shirur Elevated Corridor project.

This extension did not happen in isolation. The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2 covering Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi as extensions of the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor, spanning 12.75 km with 13 stations, connecting suburbs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi, at an estimated cost of Rs 3,626.24 crore, scheduled for completion within four years.

On the ground, MahaMetro's project leadership has been clear about the sequencing. Atul Gadgil, Project Director of MahaMetro, said the MahaMetro line will run above MSIDC's six-lane bridge and confirmed MahaMetro will develop the extension itself; the 11.63-km elevated Ramwadi to Wagholi line has been divided into two phases of 4.8 km and 6.8 km, with tenders for the first phase invited and set to be opened by the end of the month, while the second phase tender will be implemented urgently in the new year.

The urgency is well justified by daily commuter pain points. This elevated line is crucial for easing traffic congestion in eastern Pune, where passengers travelling to Pune International Airport, employees of Kharadi IT Park, and commuters using the Yerawada, Wagholi, and Chandan Nagar routes face immense difficulties due to traffic congestion. The scale of expected future demand backs up the investment, with the projected incremental daily ridership for the entire Line 2 estimated at 0.96 lakh in 2027, rising to 2.01 lakh by 2037 and 3.49 lakh by 2057.

On timelines, bidders now have a clear window to respond. Tenders for this phase, which includes four stations and access ramps, have bids due by March 4. Once contracts are finalised, MahaMetro has set a completion target of three and a half years after finalisation of tendering and contract procedures.

The momentum extends beyond this single tender. Funding support has also improved recently, with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman allocating ₹517 crore for Pune Metro in the Union Budget, with officials indicating the allocation will mainly support current metro works and the proposed Khadakwasla–Hadapsar–Kharadi–Wagholi corridor.

For homebuyers, the Kharadi-Wagholi belt has already been on developers' radar well before this tender. The proposed land parcel is located within a well-planned Kharadi-Wagholi micro-market, boasting robust social amenities and civic infrastructure, which is exactly why Mahindra Lifespaces has an active presence here through projects positioned to benefit directly once the elevated corridor becomes operational. A confirmed construction timeline typically translates into faster infrastructure development, better road access, and stronger price appreciation potential for residential projects along the alignment.
