Pune Metro's Pimpri-Nigdi Extension: Where Construction Stands in 2026

Pune's fast-growing northern suburbs are getting closer to their long-promised metro link. According to officials from MahaMetro, construction work on the 4.5-kilometer Pimpri–Nigdi stretch—an extension of the Swargate–PCMC Metro line—has reached 35% completion, with segment casting and erection running at full pace across the corridor.

The extension is being built along the median of the old Mumbai–Pune Highway, an elevated design ensures minimal disruption to ongoing road traffic. The stretch will add four new stations — Chinchwad, Akurdi, Nigdi, and Bhakti-Shakti — each planned to integrate with PMPML bus services, nearby railway stations, and auto stands, improving last-mile connectivity for residents and daily commuters alike.

On the ground, precast fabrication has been in full swing. A total of 1,337 segments are planned for this project, with 517 already completed by April, and segment erection began in October along the Nigdi–Chinchwad section. The corridor rests on roughly 150 pillars, with foundation work having started at multiple locations along the Pimpri-to-Nigdi stretch soon after the project broke ground.

MahaMetro has been visibly pushing to compress the build schedule. Pune Metro is expediting work on the Phase One extension from PCMC to Bhakti Shakti in Nigdi, aiming to complete the 4.4 km elevated corridor six months ahead of schedule. Executive Director Hemant Sonawane confirmed that the civil work is progressing rapidly, with a revised completion target of 30 months instead of the original 36, even though the foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2024 and actual construction only began in August that year.

Momentum has continued into 2026. In February, MahaMetro awarded a ₹78.5 crore contract for station facility works — covering structural components, electrical systems, escalators and lifts — to Colossus Infra Projects Private Limited, with completion expected within about 18 months. Public Relations Officer Chandrashekhar Tambavekar said the corporation is accelerating work on Phase II corridors and that the PCMC–Nigdi extension is progressing steadily, adding that the contractor's prior metro experience should help avoid delays. The overall project carries an estimated cost of approximately ₹1,048 crore, covering station infrastructure, intermodal integration, pedestrian bridges, environmental measures, depots and parking.

Looking beyond Nigdi, MahaMetro has signalled even bigger ambitions for this corridor. The proposed metro connectivity between Bhakti-Shakti Chowk in Nigdi and Chakan is set for a major expansion, with the alignment revised to cover 45.295 km and include 34 stations at an estimated cost of ₹12,937.23 crore. This future Nigdi–Chakan line, presented to Pimpri-Chinchwad officials in July 2026, would run through Ravet, Punawale, Tathawade, Wakad, Pimple Saudagar, Pimple Gurav, Nashik Phata, Bhosari, Moshi and Kurali before terminating near Chakan — stitching together some of PCMC's fastest-developing residential and industrial pockets.

For homebuyers, the immediate Pimpri-Nigdi extension matters most right now. Once operational, it will extend the existing 17.4 km Swargate-PCMC Purple Line deeper into Chinchwad, Akurdi and Nigdi, areas that already host a dense mix of industrial units, colleges and mid-income housing. Faster, direct metro access typically triggers renewed buyer interest and steady price appreciation in the catchment areas around upcoming stations, and pockets like Akurdi, Nigdi Pradhikaran and the emerging Ravet-Tathawade belt are already seeing early signs of this shift as the project timeline firms up.

With civil work past the one-third mark, station-finishing contracts freshly awarded, and a much larger Nigdi–Chakan corridor now on the drawing board, Pune's northern metro network is entering its most active construction phase yet. Homebuyers evaluating projects along this stretch would do well to track the next set of MahaMetro progress updates, expected as segment erection nears completion on the remaining sections.

Questions, Answered

What is the current construction status of the Pimpri-Nigdi metro extension?
As per MahaMetro's latest update, the 4.5-km Pimpri-Nigdi stretch has crossed 35% completion, with precast segment casting and erection underway along the Nigdi-Chinchwad section.
When is the Pimpri-Nigdi metro extension expected to be completed?
MahaMetro is targeting a revised 30-month construction schedule instead of the original 36 months, with officials aiming to finish roughly six months ahead of the original timeline. Station facility contracts awarded in early 2026 carry an additional 18-month completion window.
Which new stations will this extension add?
The extension will add four elevated stations: Chinchwad, Akurdi, Nigdi, and Bhakti-Shakti Chowk, each designed to connect with PMPML buses, auto stands and nearby transit points.
What is the total cost of the Pimpri-Nigdi metro extension?
The project is estimated to cost approximately ₹1,048 crore, covering civil construction, station infrastructure, pedestrian bridges, environmental measures, depot and parking facilities.
Is there a bigger metro expansion planned beyond Nigdi?
Yes. MahaMetro has proposed a much larger Nigdi-Chakan corridor spanning 45.295 km with 34 stations at an estimated ₹12,937.23 crore, passing through Ravet, Tathawade, Wakad, Bhosari and Moshi before reaching Chakan.
How will this metro extension impact property prices in Nigdi and Akurdi?
Areas gaining direct metro access typically see improved rental demand and steady price appreciation as connectivity improves. Nigdi, Akurdi and the upcoming Ravet-Tathawade belt are well placed to benefit as construction progresses.
Which existing metro line does this extension connect to?
The extension connects to the operational 17.4 km Swargate-PCMC Purple Line, extending it further north from PCMC to Bhakti-Shakti Chowk in Nigdi.
Are there recent contracts awarded for this project?
In February 2026, MahaMetro awarded a ₹78.5 crore contract for station facility works, including escalators, lifts and electrical systems, to Colossus Infra Projects Private Limited.
How many pillars and segments does the extension involve?
The 4.5-km viaduct is supported by around 150 pillars, and the project involves a total of 1,337 precast segments, with over 500 already completed.
Should homebuyers consider projects near the Nigdi metro corridor now?
With construction actively progressing and a bigger Nigdi-Chakan line in the pipeline, buyers looking at long-term appreciation may find early entry into this corridor advantageous before the line becomes operational.
