A Rs 1,259 crore elevated corridor is set to transform southern Ahmedabad's commute.
Enquire NowThe Centre has moved to fast-track a long-pending upgrade on National Highway 47, one of Gujarat's busiest freight and commuter corridors. The high-level Network Planning Group project involves upgrading a 10.63 km section of NH-47 to address increasing traffic congestion in the southern part of Ahmedabad connecting major highways and expressways. The stretch in question runs through some of the city's most traffic-heavy junctions, and the fresh push signals that construction timelines could tighten considerably in the months ahead.
At the core of the plan is the conversion of an already busy carriageway into a full six-lane facility with an elevated section running above ground level. Upgrading this critical 6 Lane Road including the elevated corridor of NH-47 (Narol Jn. to Sarkhej Jn.), is expected to facilitate more efficient movement of goods and people, contributing to the economic vitality of the region. Narol and Sarkhej are two of the busiest junctions on Ahmedabad's southern periphery, linking the city to Rajkot, Vadodara, and the wider Saurashtra region, so an elevated bypass here directly addresses a chronic bottleneck for both private vehicles and freight trucks.
Official estimates for the project have been pegged at approximately Rs 1,259 crore by multiple government-linked reports, a figure broadly in line with the roughly Rs 1,295 crore cost cited in recent project trackers. The Government of India has expedited the implementation of the Rs 12.59 billion National Highway (NH)-47 project aimed at easing traffic congestion in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Some cost breakdowns place the elevated viaduct component itself closer to Rs 781 crore, with the balance covering widening, land acquisition, service roads, and allied civil works along the corridor. A major project in Gujarat involves a 10.63 km stretch with an elevated road, costing about ₹781 crore, work that began in 2024 and is expected to finish in two and a half years.
Beyond decongestion, the project has been framed as part of a larger national push to modernise freight corridors. The NH-47 project includes widening and upgrading a crucial stretch of the national highway to accommodate increased vehicular traffic efficiently, designed to improve connectivity between Ahmedabad and its outskirts, facilitating smoother transportation of goods and passengers. For a city that anchors Gujarat's textile, chemical, and engineering manufacturing base, faster and more predictable travel times along NH-47 translate directly into lower logistics costs for businesses operating in and around the city.
The Ahmedabad stretch isn't an isolated upgrade — it sits within a broader wave of highway modernisation across the NH-47 corridor and adjoining routes. Just a few kilometres away, NHAI has separately been advancing an elevated section on NH-147. On the Chiloda–Gandhinagar–Sarkhej National Highway (NH-147), construction of an elevated corridor of approximately 4 km between Iskcon and Sanand flyover is progressing rapidly to ease vehicular movement. Together, these projects point to a coordinated effort by NHAI's Ahmedabad Division to decongest the city's southern and western approach roads, which have seen a sharp rise in traffic from industrial hubs like Sanand, Bagodara, and Changodar.
For homebuyers and investors, the timing matters. Improved connectivity along NH-47 has historically had a visible effect on property demand in towns and industrial clusters that sit along the route. NH 47 has boosted real estate growth in cities like Indore, Betul, Dahod, Ahmedabad, and Nagpur, with property prices rising due to better connectivity. Industrial and logistics parks positioned along this corridor — including large-format developments accessed directly off NH-47 — stand to benefit from shorter transit times to Ahmedabad's core and its rail and port linkages once the elevated section opens to traffic.
The broader NH-47 corridor itself has a long industrial legacy in the region. An industrial park for nonpolluting industries is being developed at Janshali village, Surendranagar district, located 70 km to the west of Ahmedabad, and is accessed at the northern end by the NH47. As highway capacity expands and travel times shrink, such industrial corridors along NH-47 are likely to see stronger enquiry from manufacturers looking for well-connected, plug-and-play land parcels within reach of Ahmedabad's consumption and labour markets.
While a firm construction completion date hasn't been officially locked in, project trackers following similar elevated-corridor works on NH-47 estimate a build timeline of roughly two-and-a-half years from the start of construction. Commuters travelling the Narol-Sarkhej stretch daily can expect phased traffic diversions once construction ramps up, a familiar pattern seen in other Indian cities where elevated corridors have replaced congested at-grade junctions.
